Services targeted primarily to the East End of Pittsburgh; will arrange presentations to staff and constituents on economic empowerment information and skills/tools in Allegheny County
Description of Program(s)
Family Resources sponsors the Economic Empowerment Initiative (EEI) which provides support to low income families and older youth to work toward economic self-sufficiency. The EEI provides the following programs: (1) free federal, state and local income tax preparation services to families and individuals eligible for Earned Income Tax Credits (annual income of $40,000 or below) between January 18 and April 15, 2008;(2) Economic Empowerment resources and tools workshop or consultation in community(3) One-on-one Counseling and Assistance for low income families to access and obtain public benefits and resources, utilizing the web-based "Benefit Bank" and other tools; (4) and lead agency for the Citizens Leadership Initiative a leadership development and civic engagement program for emerging community leaders in third year, currently focused in Homewood, building leaders for new Homewood Children's Initiative.
Materials / Publications
We use a variety of curriculums and materials for our financial education programs, including the National Endowment for Financial Education, High School Financial Planning Program. In addition, we utilize The Benefit Bank, an on-line tool for e-filing a broad range of public benefits including Food Stamps, LIHEAP, and medical assistance.
Mission
Family Resources mission is to prevent child abuse and neglect through strengthening families and building neighborhoods. The goal of EEI is to support low income families and older youth to work towards financial self-sufficiency and to become full participants in the life of the community.

Program Effectiveness
Family Resources EEI began developing a full set of programs and services in February 2007. Program effectiveness will be evaluated on the basis of measuring through evaluation surveys and personal follow-up:(1) increased income and financial assets (2) increased awareness of how our economic and social system operates and (3) increased engagement in civic activities including community planning and organizing, communicating personal/family goals and needs to public and private institutional leaders, and voting.
